Let's Be Well, Plan B
"To repent means to change one's mind and go in another direction; to change the way one thinks and acts." Let's Be Well 2003 will be substantially different from our previous workshops, because we have changed directions. Let's Be Well, Plan B will be offered from the early February to mid-April for health seekers who need ideas, recipes, resources, and accountability as they seek to improve the choice they make daily that affect their spirits, souls, and bodies. This year's classes are offered primarily as a followup for those who completed the Weigh of Wisdom workshop offered fall, 2001 or 2002, but alums from previous terms of Let's Be Well are also invited. Class size is limited to the number that will fit comfortably in our dining room, Thursday afternoon or evenings. Registrations will be confirmed, by phone, on a first-come, first-served basis -- see form below. The idea for Let's Be Well was born in November 1993 when Dick and I attended a nutrition seminar, based on Genesis 1:29, in Rogersville TN. The seminar was taught by the Rev. George Malkmus, a Baptist minister, who operates Hallelujah Acres, now located in Shelby NC. We opened our home in January 1994 to twenty participants who gathered for the first Let's Be Well on cold or snowy Thursday nights to listen, watch videos, and ask questions about material we considered together. Let's Be Well has gone on to challenge hundreds of people from 37 communities around Northfield to be health-seekers. Because we are no longer following the Hallelujah diet, it is important what we offer those who have taken our previous classes the opportunity to learn why we have made some substantial philosophical and dietary changes. Here's the plan for this year. Our textbook will be The Word on Health: a Biblical and Medical Overview of How to Care for your Body and Mind, Dr Michael D. Jacobson, an osteopathic physician whose parents we know. Dr Jacobson methodically addresses all of the scriptural admonitions regarding food in the Bible, pointing out that we should not be surprised that food represents a major temptation that may keep us from experiencing God's Kingship in our lives. Our first parents, Adam and Eve and Jesus himself were tempted with food. The book has 18 chapters and can be used as a reference after the class ends. We will focus primarily on chapters 6-13. During class we will be using new videos by the Westbrooks, creators of the Weigh of Wisdom workshop, as well as some by others, such as Gordon Tessler PhD and Lorraine Day MD. We will continue to base our teaching on the principle of eliminate and replenish. We will examine and compare the relative merits of various food pyramids, including those of the Westbrooks, the Mediterranean Diet, and Dr Jacobson's biblical pyramid. As always in Let's Be Well, no one plan will be prescribed, but rather we will describe various approaches to wellness-through-nutrition, so that each class member can choose the components that best suit his or her personal goals.
Cost: $60.00 per person/$75 per couple if you are willing to share the syllabus, which will be built week by week. Purchasing a textbook [$15.95 plus tax] will be encouraged but is not required. Books will be offered at the first lesson and will be ordered based on interest. If you are unable to attend these classes, and would like to order the book, please call us before February 6. This is a workshop and fieldwork will be assigned. Fall term WOW participants most pleased with their progress are the ones who were most consistent. This term you will be encouraged to make one positive change each week. We videotape our LBW lessons, primarily to deal with inclement weather and other emergencies. There is no charge to use the videos, but they may not be shared with non-members of our classes. Since we must limit registration, we will accept the first twenty paid registrations received, in order not to have an uncomfortable space crunch in our home. [We will not cash your check until after Lesson 1, which we will think of as an interest meeting. If you decide you are not interested at this time, your check will be returned, so those on the waiting list may register. *We will call to confirm your registration. We would be pleased to have you join us this term! Questions? Call us. Here is the Printable Registration Form. | |||||||||||
