What is your real age?How old are you? How old would you like to be? According to Michael Roizen MD, a preventive gerontologist and author of RealAge, [Harper Collins, 1999] by making a few changes in your lifestyle and diet, you can turn back the aging clock by as much as thirty years. Roizen says that only 30% of aging is genetic. The rest is determined by environmental factors and physical behaviors. Dr Roizen converted the risks associated with those behaviors into a chart that calculates the rate of aging. Here are some of his calculations: Floss your teeth. Keeping your teeth and gums healthy can make your real age 6.4 years younger. Reduce stress. In highly stressful times, your real age can be as much as 32 years older than your calendar age. By building a strong social network and being intentional about reducing stress, you reduce the aging that stress will cause by 30 of those 32 years. Exercise regularly. Adopting an exercise plan that builds both stamina and strength can make you nine years younger. Patrol your own health. If you are active in avoiding or managing chronic medical conditions, e.g. keeping your blood pressure close to 115/75, you can reduce your real age by as much as 26 years. +++ | |
