Happy fats can impact mild depression.

Inadequate levels of essential fatty acids, particularly the "happy fats," the omega-3s found in salmon and flaxseed, cause an imbalance that has been linked to chronic conditions like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, heart disease, and depression. Most likely, according to Let's Live, March 2001, depression occurs when, without adequate levels of EFAs, brain cells cannot properly synthesize neurotransmitters, send signal transmissions, absorb seratonin, or allow for transmitter binding-all functions essential for maintaining mood.

"To get your fatty acids back into equilibrium, start by adding 1 tbsp of flaxseed oil (rich in omega-3s) to your daily diet.... After a few months, switch to an oil that contains a more even proportion of omega-3 and omega-6 fats, such as hemp oil [or Udo's]. These oils will help keep your nails strong and your mood light."

Meantime, avoid saturated and trans fats found in processed foods, especially in burgers, french fries, shortening, and margarine. Harvard's Walter Willet, Nutrition Action Healthletter, Nov 2002, says, "There's a clear benefit in replacing unhealthy fats with healthy fats. The fat in poultry, fish, and nuts is much better than the fat in red meat and dairy." But don't overdo it. "We're not working in the fields and burning calories all day, so we need to pay attention to all forms of calories," says Willet. "You can't eat unlimited quantities of fats or you'll gain weight." It's the Goldilocks principle again. Find the balance that's just right.
