Are you protecting your brain from toxicity?
One of my favorite newsletters is The John R. Lee, MD, Medical Letter. I was interested in Dr Lee's article on how to protect our brains in his March 2001 newsletter. Dr Lee says, "The ability to think clearly is a gift, but it is also earned by avoiding toxins that can damage the brain. Unfortunately, most people don't even begin to understand the array of substances that can interfere with the ability to think." He calls fluoride one of the main culprits. "It has been known for decades that fluoride is poisonous to the brain, and some studies show higher levels of brain damage in children from fluoridated communities." He describes a 1995 study showing that fluoride exposure during intrauterine and postnatal life induces brain damage in mammals; the damage correlates with attention deficit disorder and poor problem solving throughout life. Other studies have corroborated that fluoride exposure in early life is brain damaging. Studies outside the US show that IQ levels are lower in children exposed to fluoride early in life. Is this what we want for our children? Why is fluoridated toothpaste that has a poison warning label marketed for use by children? The July 2000 issue of News on Earth has a cover story with a similar point of view: Is fluoride a cause of many medical mysteries? The editors had written an article two years previous citing growing evidence that Americans are being overdosed with fluoride from our water, from our toothpaste, and foods made with fluoridated water. The article was reprinted in a number of publications including the Boston Globe, "marking the first time in many years that a critique of fluoridation made its way into establishment media." After describing a "suppressed cancer study" showing "clear evidence of carcinogenicity in male rats" exposed to fluoride, the article describes two epidemiology studies done in China, 1995-1996, that link fluoride to brain impairment: depression of IQ in children, as well as a 1995 paper from the Journal of Neurotoxicology that links prenatal exposure of animals to fluoride with hyperactivity throughout life. You may want to be certain that your water system removes fluoride from your drinking water, if you value your brain -- and don't we all? +++ | |
